Why a plan-by-plan site

Most retirement sites are built for people with a 401(k). Public workers have something different: a defined benefit pension with its own formula, its own retirement ages and its own rules for early retirement, survivor options and cost-of-living raises. A Texas teacher, a CalPERS clerk and a Florida firefighter can work the same number of years and retire on very different checks.

Each plan page here spells out the formula in plain words, shows the tables the plan publishes, and runs a calculator that follows that plan's tiers. The calculators then cover the choices that come with a pension: when to retire, whether to join a DROP, whether to buy service credit, and how Social Security adds on top now that the Fairness Act has ended WEP and GPO.
